Barbara M. Hunter – APR
Barbara M. Hunter, APR, a recent educational strategist, will provide communication support for your strategic planning process and implementation as requested. Since 1987, Ms. Hunter has led school districts in achieving excellence in communications.
She served 14 years as the chief communications officer in two school districts – Fairfax County Public Schools and Alexandria City Public Schools, both in Northern Virginia. In 2015, she launched Hunter Communications LLC, which provides strategic solutions for improving school communications, and thereby, creating positive relationships between school districts and their stakeholders. In Fairfax County schools (187,000 students), she was in charge of the school system’s strategic communication initiatives, web site, social media, and television programming. In Alexandria City schools, a highly diverse, urban district, she transformed the communications program into a responsive and reliable one using social media, a mobile app, and family communication tools with a strong custom focus. She previously served as director of communications for the National School Boards Association where she oversaw the organization’s strategic communication efforts, web site, and media relations, and trained school board members in media relations, community engagement and group facilitation.
Ms. Hunter has a bachelor’s degree in communications and management from Hood College and a master’s degree in public relations management from the American University. She is also accredited in public relations. She has earned dozens of awards and national recognition for her work, including the highest—the Silver Anvil Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America for a community engagement campaign on changing school start times.
